Mathieu Adam

Mathieu Adam is a Belgian visual artist. He lives in Paris and currently works from his studio in Vincennes.
A graduate of the agrégation and of the Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, he developed there a practice centred on the support itself — namely, paper. This material runs through his entire body of work, becoming a plastic element as constitutive to his approach as ink, line, cutting or folding.
The whiteness of the paper, its texture and its internal layers become guiding threads from his earliest works onward.
His first series of research was shown in numerous institutions, including the Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and the Centre d'art contemporain du Luxembourg Belge. He was also represented by Belgian and Parisian galleries and took part in various Affordable Art Fairs in London, Brussels, Lille and Paris.
Since 2020, his practice has evolved with, among other things, the use of the scalpel, which introduces a cut into his work and its evolution toward a world that is at times vegetal, at times animal.
Following in the footsteps of a significant lineage of artists whose work tends to present a singular vision of nature, Mathieu Adam's work tends to present — rather than represent — that nature, using the many plasticities of paper to draw as close as possible to the immeasurable feeling it can inspire in us.
His recent works have been shown in Parisian galleries, notably Galerie Horae and Galerie Hors Champs. He is also taking part in the exhibition Vincennes dessinée, part of the Printemps du dessin organised by the Drawing Lab, where visitors can see his installation « La Chute » in the keep of the Château de Vincennes.
